How Modu Sherriff lobbied to be included in Mrs Buhari’s ‘women campaign team’ after being rejected to serve in Buhari 2019 Presidential Campaign Council

In order to remain relevant in the scheme of things as the 2019 presidential election garthers momentum, former national chairman of the PDP, Ali Modu Sherriff, who was recently schemed out of the Buhari 2019 presidential campaign council because he was no longer trusted and considered relevant in the Northeast, has lobbied his way into Aisha Buhari’s 99-man National Advisory Council for the Women and Youth Presidential Campaign for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, Daily Correspondents has exclusively learned.

Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State has been having a running battle with the APC leadership in Borno State since his return to the party in 2018.

His entrance into the APC was viewed with suspicion by the APC leadership in both Borno State and National level as well as President Muhammadu Buhari himself, because Sheriff was seen as a politician who is never to be trusted judging from his antecedents, hence, the recent decision by the APC national headquarters not to draft him into the Buhari 2019 presidential campaign council.

Buhari himself had said several times that his presidential ambitions between 2003, 2007 and 2011 were frustrated due to the presence of moles planted by the opposition into his campaign team. Many in the APC still see Sheriff as a PDP mole.

However, sources privy to the recent happenings told this newspaper that angered by the non-inclusion of his name into the core Buhari 2019 presidential campaign council that comprises of eminent Nigerians, Sheriff, in order to save his face from shame, decided to lobby his way into the Aisha Buhari women and youth campaign team, suggesting rather to serve as a member of the advisory council.

Our source said the inclusion of Modu Sherriff’s name in Mrs Buhari campaign team was an afterthought as the final list was already drawn and about to be made public when the name of Senator Sheriff came up for consideration.

“Sheriff is already angry and has been going about complaining that his name was not included into the Presidential Council list that comprises eminent personalities like Bola Tinubu, Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola.

“At a point he was even saying that he was a two time former governor of Borno State and a three time Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, yet his name was not considered but people like Senator Ali Ndume and Arch. Waziri  Bulama made the list but he was not considered. And so, to placate him, he was considered as a member of the Advisory Council of  Mrs Buhari campaign team. That was how he fought his way to the First Lady’s list,” said the source.

Announcing the 99-man squad in a statement signed by the Director of Information to Wife of the President, Suleiman Haruna, Sheriff will serve as a member of the Advisory Council with eminent Nigerians like the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, Pat Utomi, Orji Uzor Kalu and Buba Marwa among top politicians.

The statement equally announced the appointment of wives of the governors of Kogi, Imo, Oyo and Bauchi among others as zonal coordinators for the women campaign team.

“A-Women and Youth Presidential Campaign Team has been constituted to support the re-election of President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in 2019.
