Borno PDP blames Shettima for Atiku’s ‘embarrassing scores’

The Borno State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed the alleged antics of Governor Kashim Shettima for what it called the embarrassing votes its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, recorded in the state.

The party expressed surprise that despite being an indigene of the northeast with in-laws in Borno State, Atiku polled less than 10 per cent of the votes in the state, according to results of Saturday’s election collated from the 27 local government areas of the state, ahead of official declaration.

Factional PDP State Chairman Usman Badeiri, addressed reporters yesterday in Abuja, the nation’s capital, on the results of the elections from Borno State as he arrived the city from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

He said the PDP ‎had its worst presidential results under Governor Shettima.

The factional chairman recalled that from 1999, PDP’s candidates consistently scored between 30 to 40 per cent votes in the presidential elections except in the 2015 and 2019 with Shettima as governor.

Badeiri said: “You must have seen the results being collated from the 27 local government areas of Borno State. How can former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who is a son of the northeast, someone who married from Borno and whose son also married from Borno, fail to score 10 per cent on Saturday?

“Between 1999 and 2003, when the late Mala Kachalla was governor, the PDP’s candidate, Olusegun Obasanjo, scored between 30 to 50 per cent in both presidential elections. In 2007 and 2011, when Senator Ali Modu Sheriff was governor at the time of both elections, PDP’s candidates Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan all got 30 to 40 per cent.

“Imagine Jonathan, who is from the Niger Delta. However, in 2015 and 2019 (during Shettima’s era) in both elections, PDP’s candidates Goodluck Jonathan and now Atiku Abubakar both scored embarrassing votes.

“In 2015, Jonathan got six per cent of the votes cast. Now, Atiku is also getting less than 10 per cent. Was it not the same President Muhammadu Buhari who contested in 2003 and 2007 under Governor Sheriff and the PDP scored 30 to 40 per cent? Why is it that it is only under Kashim Shettima that President Buhari is getting more than 90 per cent of the votes in Borno State? Something is fishy.”
