Students of the University of Maiduguri were late Sunday evening thrown into panic following heavy and sporadic gunshots heard  around the institution.

Although the institution was not under Boko Haram attack,  multiple sources within the campus said the gunshots which started around 10.20pm caused serious panic among students residing within the campus, with many scampering for safety.

Many female students of the institution were also seen crying as they flee their hostels.

Isa Adamu, the Chief Security Officer of the university who spoke to our correspondent on phone said the attack was not on the campus but on Dalori community – a settlement behind  the institution.

“We are currently within the institution with the military, and I can tell you that the attack is behind Dalori IDP camp,”   the CSO said.

Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, who arrived Maiduguri on official engagement from Abuja today, on receiving the news this evening, stormed the university campus to reassure students of their safety.

Although details of the governor’s visit to the university is still sketchy, the Chief Security Officer of the institution, Isa Adamu added that the situation in the campus has been brought under control.

“Even the state governor was in the school, so  there is no problem.”
